Kikoy is a traditional fabric woven from cotton. It emerged centuries ago from the cultural exchange between Kenyan and Tanzanian residents and their trading partners from Arab countries (such as Oman). Kikoy is considered part of Swahili culture and was originally worn by the Maasai and Kikuyu people of the East African coast. The thin material was ideal in the hot coastal region, for example to be tied around the waist or hips. Nowadays Kikoy has different functions, such as scarf, headwear, towel, curtain, tablecloth or baby carrier. Most Kikoy fabrics are now made by machine. However, there are still some weaving mills like Abimbola Creations that continue this traditional craft by hand and pass it on to the next generation.
